Passenger-car oil · Current licence

0W-16 is a different oil, not a thinner 0W-20

SAE 0W-16 is the viscosity grade licensed under ILSAC GF-7B and shown with the API Shield. It is legal to display API SQ Resource Conserving from 31 March 2025. From 31 March 2026 the older GF-6 Starburst is no longer issued, so a new passenger-car claim is SQ / GF-7, not SP / GF-6. Use 0W-16 only where the engine maker specifies it. The exact base-oil blend and DI treat rate are developed under NDA; this page is the specification map.

The marks

SQ, GF-7A and GF-7B are three different claims

API SQ is the petrol service category that sits above SP. ILSAC splits the fuel-economy certification so a very thin oil cannot wear the Starburst of a mainstream grade:

API SQ

Licensed from 31 March 2025 for the top of the API “donut”. Resource Conserving is a separate lower-arc claim. SQ is backward-looking for older S categories; it does not make the oil safe in an engine that needs a higher HTHS.

ILSAC GF-7A

The Starburst. For petrol grades other than SAE 0W-16. From 31 March 2026, GF-6A oils are no longer eligible for a new Starburst licence.

ILSAC GF-7B

The Shield. Only SAE 0W-16. That is the page you are on. A 0W-20 formula, however modern, cannot carry GF-7B.

What we still see on shelves

API SP and GF-6 bottles remain in the market. A new development brief in 2026 should name SQ and the correct GF-7 mark, then decide whether an SP/GF-6 SKU is still required for older approvals.

Read the letter codes in context on the API categories page, and the viscosity words on SAE grades. The neighbouring build notes are 0W-20 and 5W-30.

The blend problem

Volatility and film thickness fight each other

A 0W-16 has to be thin at 150 °C and still not boil off. That pushes the base oil toward Group III, Group III+, or a PAO with a narrow cut, often with a small ester for seal swell and solvency. A heavy bright stock that would help a 20W-50 will wreck both the 0W cold crank and the Noack volatility of a 0W-16.

The DI package has to cover low-speed pre-ignition and timing-chain wear while the high-temperature high-shear viscosity stays at the SAE 16 floor. That is a different additive balance from a 15W-40 CK-4, which is built for soot and a much thicker film. Stacking a diesel claim onto a 0W-16 is not a shortcut.

Lubechem does not publish the treat rate. A brief needs the OEM fill spec, the target mark (SQ Resource Conserving, GF-7B), the base oils you can actually buy, and whether the SKU is factory fill, aftermarket, or both.

India

Where 0W-16 belongs, and where it does not

Most Indian passenger-car and motorcycle volume is still 5W-30, 10W-30, 10W-40, 15W-40 and 20W-50. 0W-16 shows up on late petrol and hybrid sumps whose owner’s manual names that grade. Selling it as a “better, thinner” upgrade for a 5W-30 city car is how bearings and chains get the wrong film.

BIS IS 13656 is still the Indian retail gate for engine oil. A GF-7B development has to be planned against that file, not only against the API directory. The additive route is the DI package and a shear-stable VI improver, chosen for this viscosity — not a package borrowed from a 5W-30 SP oil and diluted.

Questions

0W-16 questions

Can I use 0W-16 instead of 0W-20?

Only if the engine maker specifies 0W-16. The grades are neighbours on the bottle and different in the bearing. GF-7B exists so 0W-16 is not mistaken for a normal petrol oil.

Is API SQ the same as API SP?

No. SQ is the newer petrol category, licensed from 31 March 2025. SP oils already on the shelf were not automatically upgraded. A new formula should say which category it is actually being tested against.

Does Lubechem sell 0W-16 oil?

No. Lubechem Consultant develops the formula, the bill of materials and the test plan for a manufacturer. The finished oil is blended and licensed by the brand that owns it.

A 0W-16 brief starts with the OEM grade, not with a treat rate

If the manual says 0W-20 or 5W-30, stay on those pages. If it says 0W-16, the work is SQ and GF-7B.
