Extreme Pressure (EP) Additive India —
Sulfur-Phosphorus Chemistry for GL-4, GL-5 & MT-1

Extreme-pressure additives — primarily sulphurised olefin, sulphurised fatty ester and phosphate ester — form sacrificial sulphide / phosphide films on steel under shock loading, preventing scuffing, scoring and welding in heavily-loaded gear meshes, hypoid axles and heavy-duty manual transmissions. This guide covers EP chemistry families, treat rates for API GL-4 / GL-5 / MT-1 / SAE J2360, Timken / Four-Ball / FZG test methods, regulatory shift away from chlorinated paraffin, and Indian sourcing.

Six EP Chemistries
Used in Gear & Industrial Oil

SULPHURISED OLEFIN
5-15% Active Sulphur Workhorse
Sulphurised C12-C18 α-olefin from olefin + sulphur thermal reaction. Active sulphur 5-15% — reacts with steel at high flash temperature to form FeS sacrificial film. Workhorse EP for API GL-5 hypoid gear oil, GL-4 manual trans, MT-1 HDD trans. Lubrizol Anglamol 99, Afton HiTEC 1530, BRB sulfides. Treat 4-7% in finished gear oil.
Gear GL-5
SULPHURISED FATTY ESTER
Food-Grade EP
Sulphurised lard oil substitutes (sulphurised TMP-trioleate, sulphurised rapeseed methyl ester). NSF H1 / H2 food-grade-acceptable chemistry. Used in food-machine gear oil and incidental-food-contact metalworking. Performance slightly below sulphurised olefin but adequate for most applications. Treat 5-9%.
Food H1 / H2
PHOSPHATE ESTER
Yellow-Metal Friendly
Tri-cresyl phosphate (TCP), tri-xylyl phosphate (TXP), alkyl phosphates. Decompose to phosphide / phosphate film at contact — anti-wear plus EP. Less aggressive on copper / brass / yellow-metal than sulfide. Used as co-EP in gear oil and ashless AW in hydraulic. Treat 1-3% as co-EP, 3-5% as standalone.
Yellow-Metal Compat
CHLORINATED PARAFFIN
Declining — SCCP Restricted
Chlorinated paraffin (C10-C30 alkanes with 40-70% Cl content). High-performance EP historically, but SCCP (C10-C13) restricted globally; MCCP (C14-C17) under regulatory review; LCCP (C18-C30) currently unrestricted. Use declining — most new formulations move to sulphurised olefin + phosphate ester.
Declining
BORATE EP
Gel-Network EP
Potassium borate, calcium borate gel-dispersion EP. Forms gel network at contact under shock load, gives Timken / Four-Ball EP without sulphur or phosphorus. Used in ashless / low-SAPS hydraulic and specialty applications. Treat 1-3%.
Ashless EP
Mo-DTC EP+FM
Combined EP, AW & Friction
Molybdenum dithiocarbamate (Mo-DTC) gives EP via MoS2 tribofilm formation, plus anti-wear and friction-modifier function. Used in PCMO fuel-economy oil and in some gear formulations. Treat 0.05-0.15% Mo. Premium-tier additive.
Multi-Function
Sulphurised Olefin Synthesis

Five-Step Sulphurised
Olefin Manufacturing

1
Olefin Feedstock
C12-C18 α-olefin (1-octene, 1-decene, 1-dodecene) or isobutylene-derived olefin. Higher molecular weight olefin gives higher oil solubility but lower active sulphur per kg. Indian olefin sourcing — Reliance / IOCL / Sasol via import. PIB-derived olefin from BASF Glissopal.
2
Sulphur Charge
Elemental sulphur charged at 10-30 wt% of olefin in pressure reactor. Reaction temperature 150-180 °C, pressure 5-15 bar. Higher S charge gives higher active sulphur in product but also higher residual elemental sulphur (limits oil compatibility).
3
Controlled S-S Bond Formation
Olefin + S reaction proceeds through olefin double-bond opening and S-S bond formation across the carbon chain. Final product is polysulphide-bridged olefin chain. Reaction time 4-8 hr. H2S off-gas scrubbed by NaOH wash.
4
Dilution & Stripping
Product diluted with 100N Group I / II base oil to standard active matter (30-60% active). Residual H2S and light sulphur compounds stripped by N2 sparge / vacuum. Strip endpoint: H2S <5 ppm, copper-strip rating <1B.
5
Viscosity / Active-S QC
QC release: active sulphur by iodometric titration (target 5-15% depending on grade), total sulphur by combustion, viscosity at 100 °C, copper-strip ASTM D130 (target 1A-1B), Timken OK load on blended gear oil, storage stability hold.

EP vs Anti-Wear

Where AW Ends
and EP Takes Over

AW THRESHOLD
Load < 1,000 N
At loads < 1,000 N (and flash temp < 200 °C), anti-wear additive (ZDDP, phosphate ester at low treat) forms a chemisorbed film on the steel surface. Film is regenerated continuously by additive in oil. Sufficient for engine bearing, cam-follower and most hydraulic.
AW Regime
EP THRESHOLD
Load > 1,000 N (Shock)
At shock loads > 1,000 N and instantaneous flash temp 600-1000 °C, AW film is destroyed. EP additive thermally decomposes at the contact to form sacrificial sulphide / phosphide / chloride film — softer than steel, scuffs preferentially, prevents micro-welding.
EP Regime
AW FILM — LOW TEMP
Chemisorbed Polymer Film
ZDDP tribofilm forms at 80-150 °C as a chemisorbed phosphate-zinc-iron mixed polymer ~50-150 nm thick. Renewable from oil. Smooth, low-friction. Bears load via elastic deformation of the film.
Tribofilm
EP FILM — HIGH TEMP
Sacrificial Sulphide / Phosphide
FeS / FeP / FeCl sacrificial film forms at flash temp 200-1000 °C through thermal decomposition of EP additive at the contact. Film is 1-10 µm thick, plastically deforms (not elastic), wears off in service. Renewable from oil reservoir.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked About
EP Additives

GL-4 vs GL-5 treat rate?

API GL-4 (manual transmission, transaxle, mild-condition hypoid gear) uses 4-5% EP additive in finished oil with active sulphur 2-3% — corresponds to Timken OK Load 40-50 lbf, Four-Ball Weld 200-250 kgf. API GL-5 (hypoid rear axle, severe-condition gear) uses 5-7% EP with active S 3-5% — Timken OK 60+ lbf, Four-Ball Weld 300+ kgf.

API GL-5 LS (limited-slip differential) uses similar EP plus friction modifier. API MT-1 (heavy-duty manual transmission) uses GL-4-level EP plus syncro-friction-friendly chemistry.

Why is sulfur-phosphorus the standard?

Under shock loading (gear tooth meshing, axle loaded under torque), instantaneous flash temperature at the contact reaches 600-1000 °C — high enough to thermally decompose the EP additive at the contact. Sulphurised olefin decomposes to release active sulphur that reacts with steel to form FeS (iron sulphide) sacrificial film — softer than steel, scuffs preferentially, prevents micro-welding.

Phosphate ester decomposes to release phosphorus that forms FeP/Fe3P phosphide film. Sulphur-phosphorus together gives synergistic film with both anti-scuffing (S) and anti-wear (P) action.

Sulphurised fatty ester for food grade?

For NSF H1 / H2 food-grade gear oil and incidental-food-contact lubricants, regulatory restrictions prohibit traditional sulphurised olefin and chlorinated paraffin. Sulphurised fatty ester (sulphurised lard oil substitutes — rapeseed methyl ester + S2Cl2 derivatives, or sulphurised TMP-trioleate) gives EP function with food-grade-acceptable chemistry.

Treat rate 5-9% for H1-class gear oil. Performance is slightly below sulphurised olefin — Timken OK ~40-50 lbf vs 60+ lbf — but adequate for most food-machine gear applications.

SCCP / MCCP regulation impact?

Short-chain chlorinated paraffin (SCCP, C10-C13) is restricted under the Stockholm Convention as a persistent organic pollutant. Medium-chain (MCCP, C14-C17) is under regulatory review in EU and increasingly restricted. Long-chain (LCCP, C18-C30) is currently unrestricted but under scrutiny.

Lubricant blenders selling into EU OEMs are required to use MCCP or LCCP — or move entirely away from chlorinated chemistry. SCCP is essentially out of new formulations globally. Sulphurised olefin + phosphate ester combination replaces chlorinated EP without performance loss in most applications.

Timken vs Four-Ball — which test?

Both test EP but measure different aspects. Timken OK Load (ASTM D2782) measures the maximum load that the EP film can support without scoring — a single-point steady-load test. API GL-5 target Timken OK 60+ lbf. Four-Ball Weld Load (ASTM D2783) measures the load that causes microweld between three stationary balls and one rotating ball under increasing load. API GL-5 target 300+ kgf.

Timken correlates better to hypoid axle scoring; Four-Ball correlates better to gear tooth scuffing. Most EP specifications require both tests.

Indian EP additive suppliers?

Branded EP from Lubrizol Anglamol 99 / 6080, Afton HiTEC 343 / 1530 / 1540, Infineum C9425 EP, BRB International (Belgium) sulphurised products, Chemtura/LANXESS Vanlube. India landed ₹320-460 / kg.

Lubechem custom equivalents (LC-EP-SULF-OLF sulphurised olefin, LC-EP-PHOS phosphate ester, LC-EP-GL5-01 complete gear EP package) ₹220-310 / kg — 28-35% saving. PIB feedstock and olefin sourcing from Indian distributors (BRB Mumbai, Stepan). For the full picture across chemistries, see our guide to lubricant additive suppliers in India.

EP for axle vs MT-1?

API GL-5 hypoid axle EP package is sulphur-phosphorus heavy (3-5% active S, 1500-2000 ppm P) to give Timken OK 60+ for the high-load hypoid meshing geometry. The friction profile is high — fine for axle but unacceptable in manual transmission synchroniser.

API MT-1 (heavy-duty manual transmission) uses lower sulphur (2-3% active S) plus friction-modifying chemistry tuned for syncro engagement. SAE J2360 spec adds further constraints. GL-5 axle EP cannot be used directly in MT-1 transmission — separate formulation required.

Custom EP package economics?

For mid-volume gear oil blenders (500-5,000 MT/year), custom EP package saves ₹15-30 lakh per year on additive cost. The S-P EP chemistry route (sulphurised olefin from PIB / olefin + S, phosphate ester from alcohol + P2O5 or POCl3, plus CI/AO supporting cast) is well-established.

Lubechem builds custom LC-EP-GL5-01 with sulphurised olefin (BRB or local manufacture), phosphate ester (BASF, Albemarle), corrosion inhibitor (King Industries), antioxidant blend. Formula IP transferred at engagement closeout.
