Grease additive packages differ fundamentally from engine-oil DI — there's no detergent (no combustion acids), no PPD (grease is solid), and the soap thickener IS the load-bearing solid film. Instead, grease additives focus on anti-wear, extreme pressure, antioxidant, corrosion inhibitor and tackifier. This guide covers grease additive composition, treat rates by thickener type (lithium, lithium complex, calcium sulfonate complex, polyurea, aluminium complex), performance test panel and Indian sourcing.

Lithium 12-hydroxystearate NLGI 2 grease typically uses 5-8% total additive in finished grease — AW 0.5-1.0% ZDDP, EP 2-4% sulphurised olefin, AO 0.3-0.6% phenolic + aminic, CI 0.3-0.5% sulfonate, tackifier 0.3-1.5% PIB.
Lithium complex (lithium 12-OH + lithium azelate complex thickener) tolerates higher additive treat — 8-12% total — because the complex thickener has better mechanical and thermal stability. Lithium complex grease often carries 1.0-1.5% ZDDP, 3-5% sulphurised EP, 0.5-1.0% AO. The higher additive treat extends grease life under shock load.
Polyurea (diurea / triurea) thickeners are sensitive to acidic and reactive additives — careful selection required. Mild sulphurised olefin (3-4% active S, no chlorinated paraffin) and zinc-free amine-phosphate AW additive at 1-3% are the standard EP package.
Avoid high-active-S sulphides and conventional ZDDP which can react with the polyurea N-H groups, causing thickener breakdown. Specialty grease additive houses (Rhein Chemie, Vanderbilt) sell polyurea-compatible EP packages.
ASTM D1831 roll stability tests grease in a rotating roll mill (200,000 cycles, 24 hr at 80 °C) and measures change in NLGI penetration. Roll-stable grease shows <30% change; poor roll-stable shows >50%. The thickener (lithium, complex, polyurea) dominates roll stability — additive helps secondarily through tackifier PIB (resists mechanical breakdown).
Excessive solvent in additive package can reduce roll stability. Additive selection should avoid high-aromatic carrier oils and use only well-filtered low-haze additive concentrates.
Polyisobutylene (PIB) is the standard grease tackifier — adds cohesion (grease sticks to itself) and adhesion (grease sticks to metal surfaces). Low-MW PIB (Mn 950-1300) gives moderate tack at low treat (0.3-0.8%). Mid-MW PIB (Mn 1300-2300) gives stronger tack at 0.5-1.5%. High-MW PIB (Mn 2500+) gives very strong tack but can degrade roll stability.
Polyisoprene (e.g. OPPANOL latex) is the alternative for very-high-tack grease — used in chain lubricants and conveyor grease.
Calcium nitrite is the standard vapour-phase rust inhibitor in industrial grease — gives 3-5 year storage protection in humid environments. Treat rate 0.5-2.0%. Sodium nitrite is the older alternative — works but slower vapour pressure. In some grease formulations both are used together for layered protection.
Nitrite-free alternatives (amine borate, amine carboxylate) are increasingly used in food-grade NSF H1 / H2 grease where nitrite is not permitted. CIN (calcium-bearing nitrite-free corrosion inhibitor) packages are available from Rhein Chemie and King Industries for food-grade grease.
Specialty grease houses: Rhein Chemie (Germany — grease specialist), Vanderbilt Vanlube 829 (Mo + EP for grease), King Industries (NA-SUL CI, CI-1235), Adeka Sakura-Lube (Mo trinuclear for high-performance grease). Indian sourcing: IPAC Industries (Mumbai), Lubechem custom blend.
Branded India landed: Rhein Chemie LC ₹650-1,100 / kg (specialty); Vanderbilt ₹600-980 / kg; King Industries ₹520-820 / kg. Lubechem custom (LC-GR-AP-LI lithium, LC-GR-AP-CMP complex, LC-GR-AP-PU polyurea-safe) ₹380-650 / kg.
For mid-volume grease manufacturers (200-2,000 MT/year), custom additive package saves ₹10-25 lakh per year. Grease additive package is typically 5-12% of finished grease cost — modest savings per kg, meaningful at volume.
Lubechem custom grease additive package (LC-GR-AP series) reverse-engineered against branded grease additive packages from Rhein Chemie, Vanderbilt, King Industries. Formula IP transferred at engagement closeout. Pass D2596 weld load, D2266 wear, D4048 Cu strip and D1743 rust within 4% of branded baseline.
Key differences. (1) No detergent — grease has no combustion acids to neutralise. (2) No PPD — grease is solid; pour point not applicable. (3) Tackifier present — grease must stick to metal and to itself, requires PIB / polyisoprene.
(4) Soap compatibility critical — additives must not react with lithium / calcium / aluminium soap thickeners. (5) Lower total additive treat (5-12% in grease vs 10-22% DI in engine oil) because thickener gives load-bearing solid film independently. (6) Higher AW/EP relative share in additive — engine oil ZDDP dominates AW; grease additive package is split more evenly between AW, EP, AO and CI.
