Two-stroke oil is mixed with petrol at 1:50 to 1:100 ratio and burnt in the combustion chamber along with the fuel. Used in motorcycle 2T, modern 2T scooter (Aprilia SR, Vespa), chainsaw, brush cutter, outboard marine, agricultural 2T equipment. Key technical requirements: low smoke (clean exhaust), low ash (no plug/ring deposits), good lubricity at 2% treat in fuel mix. JASO FB / FC / FD classification covers the spec range. This guide gives the recommended FC BOM, JASO test panel, and Indian brand benchmarks.

2T oil is engine lubricant designed to be mixed with petrol (typically 1:50 to 1:100 ratio) and burnt in two-stroke engines — motorcycle 2T, modern 2T scooter, chainsaw, brush cutter, outboard motor, weed-whacker, model aircraft engine. Unlike 4T engine oil which circulates and stays in the sump, 2T oil mixes with fuel, lubricates the crankcase and cylinder on the way through, then burns in the combustion chamber.
Key requirements: low smoke, low ash, good lubricity at 2% treat in fuel mix, water-tolerant for outboard. JASO classification FB (basic), FC (low smoke), FD (premium — low smoke + biodegradable).
JASO FC 2T oil BOM (%): bright stock 35%, PIB Mn 950 22%, synthetic ester (TMP-trioleate) 18%, kerosene 12%, low-ash ZDDP 1%, phenolic AO 0.4%, ASA CI 0.4%, PIB tackifier Mn 2300 5%, PEG 2%, dye 200 ppm, odorant 100 ppm, balance Group I diluent.
Process: blend at 60-70 °C, dose PIB last. KV100 8-12 cSt, flash >100 °C, JASO FC smoke test pass, ash <0.10%.
JASO M345 classifies 2T oil. FB (basic) — minimum performance for low-tech older 2T. FC (low smoke) — FB + low smoke (M341-92 test ≥85 vs reference) + low ash. Modern scooter standard. FD (premium FC+) — FC + biodegradability (60% in 28 days, OECD 301B). Premium positioning.
India market: FC ~75% of 2T volume; FB ~15% (legacy / budget); FD ~10% (premium / outboard marine). API TC and ISO L-EGD are international equivalents to JASO FC.
India 2T market: declining as 4-stroke scooters replaced 2T. Current 2T volume from legacy motorcycle aftermarket (RX 100, Yezdi, Yamaha 2T enthusiasts), modern 2T premium scooter (Aprilia SR, Vespa 2T historical), chainsaw / brush cutter / agricultural, outboard marine. Total India 2T ~80-120 ML/year (vs 4T at 2-3 GL/year).
Brands: Castrol Power 1 Racing 2T, Shell Advance Ultra 2T, Motul 800 2T, Liqui Moly Racing 2T, IOCL Servo Activol, BPCL Mak 2T, HPCL Power 2T, Veedol 2T. ₹220-580 / L. Lubechem custom (LC-2T-FC-PREM) ex-works ₹140-200/L at 5+ MT batch.
2T oil burns in the combustion chamber along with the fuel — anything that doesn't burn cleanly leaves visible exhaust smoke (rider/customer complaint) or deposits on plug, ring, exhaust port (engine performance loss). Low smoke achieved by avoiding heavy aromatic / asphaltic components, using clean-burning synthetic ester or PIB.
Low ash achieved by avoiding traditional metallic AW additives. JASO FC ash limit 0.10%; FD ash limit 0.18%. Mineral oil with PIB + ester blend with carefully selected low-ash AW is the standard chemistry.
Outboard marine 2T (Mercury, Yamaha Marine, Suzuki Marine) demands additional water tolerance + corrosion protection beyond JASO FC. NMMA TC-W3 spec covers outboard marine 2T — adds water-emulsibility test, salt-water corrosion (D665B), copper strip 1A at 100 °C 24 hr.
Outboard 2T BOM uses more ester (25-35%) for water tolerance and amine carboxylate CI for salt-water rust. Land-based 2T (motorcycle, chainsaw) doesn't need this — simpler, lower cost. Outboard 2T price 25-40% premium over JASO FC motorcycle 2T.
