Thread compound is dope, not grease. A casing-thread compound makes up the sealing interface between an OCTG joint and is expected to hold pressure of 5,000 to 15,000 psi at 150-200C downhole, while also lubricating the threads through tens of make-up cycles. The compound is not a lubricant in the conventional sense — it is a complex grease carrier loaded with copper, graphite, zinc and bismuth solid particles. API RP 5A3 is the modern lead-free formulation that replaced the earlier 5A2 lead-bearing compound (lead now restricted on environmental grounds). The formulation chemistry is unique to oil & gas and unrelated to mainstream lubrication.
Gas compressors run hot and dirty. A natural-gas reciprocating compressor at a GAIL pipeline station handles wet gas with H2S, mercaptans, traces of glycol from upstream dehydration, and oxygen ingress at startup. Discharge temperature is 150-180C continuously. A conventional Group I or II mineral compressor oil oxidises rapidly under this duty cycle and produces sticky varnish on cylinder walls and ring grooves. PAO synthetic compressor oil with carefully chosen ash-free anti-wear and antioxidant is the only durable answer. We design these for 4000-8000 hour drain intervals.
Refinery is a sour-service environment. Hydrogen sulphide, chloride, ammonia and process amines are present throughout a refinery. Every lubricant exposed to these — valve stem grease, pump bearing oil, compressor cylinder oil — must resist sulphidic and chloride corrosion. We use ZDDP-free chemistry on valve stem greases (because ZDDP decomposes in H2S service producing iron sulphide), select PTFE solid lubricant for sour-valve packing applications, and provide corrosion protection on the metallic compounding ingredients.
Silicone is forbidden in many downstream products. Silicone antifoam (the workhorse antifoam in most industrial applications) is a downstream catalyst poison — even trace silicone contamination of a reformer catalyst causes irreversible deactivation. API thread compound (also called pipe dope or thread dope) is applied to tubing, casing and drill-pipe connections to seal pressure between the male and female threads and to prevent galling during make-up and break-out. It is a complex grease carrier loaded with metallic solid particles — graphite, zinc, copper and bismuth in modern formulations.
API RP 5A2 was the historical formulation containing lead. API RP 5A3 is the modern lead-free environmentally improved compound that replaced 5A2 because of lead toxicity. Most modern OCTG procurement now requires 5A3-compliant dope. We formulate the lead-free 5A3 chemistry directly.
Gas compressors handling natural gas, hydrocarbon gas or process gas run hot (140-180C discharge typical), see continuous condensable hydrocarbon contamination from the gas itself, and require very long service life. A conventional Group I or II mineral compressor oil oxidises rapidly under this duty and produces sticky varnish on cylinder walls and ring grooves.
PAO synthetic gives the oxidation stability (RPVOT 400-600 minutes vs 200-300 for mineral), the viscosity index, the clean break-in behaviour and the long drain interval that the duty cycle actually requires. 4000-8000 hour intervals are routine on PAO; mineral oil typically forces 2000-3000 hour intervals.
