The Chemistry Constraints
Unique to Oil & Gas

Thread compound is dope, not grease. A casing-thread compound makes up the sealing interface between an OCTG joint and is expected to hold pressure of 5,000 to 15,000 psi at 150-200C downhole, while also lubricating the threads through tens of make-up cycles. The compound is not a lubricant in the conventional sense — it is a complex grease carrier loaded with copper, graphite, zinc and bismuth solid particles. API RP 5A3 is the modern lead-free formulation that replaced the earlier 5A2 lead-bearing compound (lead now restricted on environmental grounds). The formulation chemistry is unique to oil & gas and unrelated to mainstream lubrication.

Gas compressors run hot and dirty. A natural-gas reciprocating compressor at a GAIL pipeline station handles wet gas with H2S, mercaptans, traces of glycol from upstream dehydration, and oxygen ingress at startup. Discharge temperature is 150-180C continuously. A conventional Group I or II mineral compressor oil oxidises rapidly under this duty cycle and produces sticky varnish on cylinder walls and ring grooves. PAO synthetic compressor oil with carefully chosen ash-free anti-wear and antioxidant is the only durable answer. We design these for 4000-8000 hour drain intervals.

Refinery is a sour-service environment. Hydrogen sulphide, chloride, ammonia and process amines are present throughout a refinery. Every lubricant exposed to these — valve stem grease, pump bearing oil, compressor cylinder oil — must resist sulphidic and chloride corrosion. We use ZDDP-free chemistry on valve stem greases (because ZDDP decomposes in H2S service producing iron sulphide), select PTFE solid lubricant for sour-valve packing applications, and provide corrosion protection on the metallic compounding ingredients.

Silicone is forbidden in many downstream products. Silicone antifoam (the workhorse antifoam in most industrial applications) is a downstream catalyst poison — even trace silicone contamination of a reformer catalyst causes irreversible deactivation. Refinery operations therefore use silicone-free polymer antifoams. We formulate the silicone-free chemistry that the rest of the lubricant world has not had to think about. North-India Gas Pipeline Compressor Station — PAO ISO VG 46 Reformulated to Eliminate Varnish
A north-India gas pipeline compressor station operating 4 reciprocating gas compressors (5 MW class) on a high-pressure natural-gas main line was experiencing recurring varnish formation on compressor cylinder walls and ring grooves at the 6,000-hour service mark, requiring premature top-end overhauls. The existing imported PAO ISO VG 46 oil cost roughly Rs 460 per litre at delivered landed price and was using approximately 12,000 litres per annum across the station.
We diagnosed the varnish issue to insufficient antioxidant headroom under the discharge temperature condition (peak cylinder skin temperature was running at 195C, above the imported product’s design ceiling). We reformulated using Indian-imported PAO 6 base with a small ester component for additive solvency, replaced the standard hindered-phenol antioxidant with a hybrid aminic-phenolic synergistic system at higher treat rate, and added a specific ashless dispersant to suspend any deposit precursor before it could lay down. RPVOT rose from 280 minutes to 540 minutes. Varnish-formation tendency (MPC analysis) dropped well below the action limit. Cylinder inspection at the next overhaul showed clean ring grooves. Delivered cost was Rs 340 per litre — a 26% reduction with simultaneously improved performance.

What is API thread compound and why are there 5A2 and 5A3 grades?

API thread compound (also called pipe dope or thread dope) is applied to tubing, casing and drill-pipe connections to seal pressure between the male and female threads and to prevent galling during make-up and break-out. It is a complex grease carrier loaded with metallic solid particles — graphite, zinc, copper and bismuth in modern formulations.

API RP 5A2 was the historical formulation containing lead. API RP 5A3 is the modern lead-free environmentally improved compound that replaced 5A2 because of lead toxicity. Most modern OCTG procurement now requires 5A3-compliant dope. We formulate the lead-free 5A3 chemistry directly.

Why PAO synthetic for gas compressor oil?

Gas compressors handling natural gas, hydrocarbon gas or process gas run hot (140-180C discharge typical), see continuous condensable hydrocarbon contamination from the gas itself, and require very long service life. A conventional Group I or II mineral compressor oil oxidises rapidly under this duty and produces sticky varnish on cylinder walls and ring grooves.

PAO synthetic gives the oxidation stability (RPVOT 400-600 minutes vs 200-300 for mineral), the viscosity index, the clean break-in behaviour and the long drain interval that the duty cycle actually requires. 4000-8000 hour intervals are routine on PAO; mineral oil typically forces 2000-3000 hour intervals.

What is CLP gear oil?
CLP is the DIN 51517-3 classification for enclosed industrial gear oil with anti-wear (the "A"), rust inhibitor (the "C") and oxidation inhibitor (the "P" stands for high-pressure EP load capacity). CLP ISO VG 220, 320 and 460 are the workhorses of refinery and petrochemical heavy gearbox lubrication — FCC main air-blower drives, reformer gear cases, splitter column gearboxes, extruder reducers. FZG above stage 12 and micro-pitting resistance are the typical performance windows.
Do you formulate valve stem grease for refinery service?
Yes. Valve stem grease for refinery isolation valves, gate valves, plug valves and ball valves requires high-temperature stability (above 250C dropping point), corrosion protection against H2S and chloride attack characteristic of sour-service refinery operations, and chemical compatibility with hydrocarbon process media. We use synthetic base with PTFE solid lubricant and ZDDP-free additive chemistry (because ZDDP decomposes in sour service to iron sulphide and loses effectiveness).
Can you formulate drilling mud lubricant?
Yes. Drilling mud lubricant is an additive to water-based or oil-based mud that reduces torque and drag at the drill string in directional and horizontal wells. Water-soluble ester-based chemistry is the modern preferred technology, with biodegradable variants for environmentally sensitive operations. We formulate compatible with bentonite mud and polymer mud systems used by ONGC and Oil India for directional drilling in the Krishna-Godavari basin, Mumbai High and Assam & Arakan fields.

Yes. Offshore platform lubrication (ONGC Bombay High, Krishna-Godavari basin, Cauvery basin) overlaps with both upstream oil & gas chemistry and marine chemistry. The salt-spray environment requires marine-grade calcium-sulphonate-complex grease for deck and crane applications, while the process side uses the standard gas-compressor PAO and refinery-spec valve stem grease. We formulate both ranges and align them for offshore operating consumables.
