Slideway (way) oil is the specialised lubricant for machine-tool slideways — lathes, milling machines, CNC machining centres, surface grinders. Key requirements: stick-slip elimination (smooth static-to-dynamic friction transition), tackifier-rich (adheres to vertical Y-axis slideway), cutting-fluid contamination tolerance. Mobil Vactra No.2 (ISO VG 68) is the global benchmark. This guide gives the recommended ISO VG 68 BOM and Indian machine-tool aftermarket positioning.
| Component group | Typical role | Typical share |
|---|---|---|
| Base oil / emulsifier or synthetic base | Lubricity & cooling carrier | ~50–80% |
| EP & lubricity additives | Tool life & surface finish | balance |
| Corrosion inhibitor, coupler, biocide | Rust, stability & bio-resistance | balance |
Indicative high-level composition only. The exact components, treat rates, performance additives and approved suppliers are shared under NDA as part of a Lubechem formulation engagement.
Process: dissolve PIB + polyisoprene in warm base oil at 80 °C; cool to 60 °C and add fatty FM (oleic + stearic); charge R&O / AW / EP / AO / CI / Ca sulfonate; demulsifier and foam inhibitor last. QC: KV40 68 cSt, KV100 8-9 cSt, VI 95+, stick-slip ratio >0.95 (Cincinnati P-47 test), water shedding D1401 ≤40/40/0 in 30 min, copper strip 1B, all confirmed by ASTM Lubricant & Grease Testing. Ex-works ₹160-220 / L at 5 MT batch. Pack 200 L drum (industrial supply).
Slideway oil (way oil) is the specialised lubricant for machine-tool slideways — lathes, milling machines, CNC machining centres, surface grinders. Slideways have unique requirements: boundary lubrication at low speed; stick-slip elimination critical (otherwise the slideway sticks then jumps, ruining surface finish); adhesion to vertical / inverted surfaces; cutting fluid contamination tolerance.
DIN 51502 classification CGLP (combined slideway + hydraulic) or G (slideway-only). Mobil Vactra No.2 (ISO VG 68) is the global benchmark.
ISO VG 68 slideway oil BOM (%): Group I 220N 35%, Group I Bright Stock 25%, PIB tackifier Mn 1300 8%, polyisoprene 2%, fatty acid FM (oleic + stearic blend) 4%, R&O + AW package 1.5%, sulphurised olefin EP mild 1%, phenolic AO 0.4%, aminic AO 0.3%, ASA + TTA CI 0.4%, Ca sulfonate 1.5%, silicone foam inhibitor 50 ppm, demulsifier 0.05%, balance Group I diluent.
Process: dissolve PIB at 80 °C; add fatty FM at 60 °C; charge R&O / AW / AO / CI; foam inhibitor last. QC: KV40 68 cSt, stick-slip ratio >0.95, D1401 demulsibility pass.
Stick-slip is the jerky alternating stick-jump motion in slideways without proper lubrication. The slideway momentarily 'sticks' (static friction), then suddenly breaks free and 'slips' (dynamic friction lower). Result: surface finish defects on machined part (chatter marks), positioning inaccuracy in CNC, accelerated slideway wear.
Lubricant must have low and SMOOTH transition from static to dynamic friction — static/dynamic ratio close to 1.0. Achieved by fatty acid friction modifier (oleic / stearic at 2-5%) + tackifier (PIB) combination — the kind of bespoke chemistry handled under Additive Package Development. Vactra No.2 ratio ~0.97; aftermarket targets 0.92-0.98.
DIN 51502 classifies slideway oil: G — slideway-only, used with separate hydraulic system. ISO VG 68 or 220. CGLP — combined slideway + hydraulic + gear for machines sharing one oil tank (common in older lathes). ISO VG 32 / 68.
Cincinnati P-47, P-50, P-53 are specific OEM slideway specs. Indian machine tool aftermarket: G class dominant for dedicated slideway; CGLP for older / smaller machines. Modern CNC uses separate slideway + hydraulic — G class preferred.
India slideway oil driven by machine-tool industry — Bangalore (HMT, BFW, Ace Designers), Pune (Mahindra, Bharat Forge), Coimbatore (Lakshmi Machine Works), Chennai (Brakes India auto components), NCR Manesar / Faridabad. Volume ~15-25 ML/year.
Brands: Mobil Vactra No.2 / No.4 (volume leader), Shell Tonna S2 M, Castrol Magnaglide D, Total Drosera, Kluber Lamora D, IOCL Servo Way Lube, BPCL Mak Slideway. ₹220-450 / L retail. Lubechem custom (LC-SLIDE-VG68) ex-works ₹160-220/L.
Slideway oil routinely contaminated by cutting fluid splashing from machining zone. Slideway oil must shed water — separate cleanly from cutting fluid emulsion within 30-60 minutes rather than form persistent emulsion. ASTM D1401 demulsibility test ≤40/40/0 in 30 min.
Failure leads to slideway oil-cutting-fluid emulsion that doesn't lubricate properly and breeds bacteria. Calcium sulfonate at 1-2% aids water-shedding plus rust protection. Lubechem slideway oil tested D1401 per shipment QC.
