Process: melt petrolatum at 60-80 °C; add ZnO + fatty acid + light oil with low-shear mixing; cool to 40 °C and add CI + colourant; package warm in 25 g / 50 g / 100 g tube. Battery terminal grease is applied to vehicle battery terminals to prevent the green / white corrosion that forms when battery electrolyte vapour reacts with lead-acid terminal post. Without protection, corrosion builds up over 6-12 months, increases resistance, causes starting problems.
Two chemistries: (1) Petrolatum-based — soft white Vaseline-class grease, NLGI 1, simple corrosion barrier. Cheap, widely used. (2) Silicone (PDMS) based — dielectric grease for premium / OEM. Better high-temperature stability and rubber-friendly.
Petrolatum BOM (%): white petrolatum 75%, light mineral oil 8%, zinc oxide 8%, ASA CI 1%, tolutriazole 0.5%, fatty acid 4%, red colourant 1%, balance diluent 2.5%.

Battery terminal grease is traditionally red for two reasons: (1) Visual identification — workshop technician can see it has been applied; (2) Marketing convention — consumers expect red. Red colour from zinc oxide (white) + iron oxide (red) or zinc-cadmium-free red dye.
Modern formulations sometimes use clear (Vaseline-class) or green / blue for product differentiation. Function is unchanged across colour. Premium OEM dielectric (Dow Corning 4 Compound) is white-grey from PDMS + fumed silica.

(1) Disconnect battery negative terminal first, then positive. (2) Clean terminal post and cable clamp with wire brush + battery terminal cleaner spray. (3) Dry thoroughly. (4) Apply pea-sized amount of grease to ENTIRE inside of cable clamp + on terminal post AFTER reconnection. (5) Reconnect positive first, then negative. (6) Tighten to spec.
Visible grease film around terminal seals atmospheric vapour. Reapply every 12-18 months or at battery replacement. Single tube (25-50 g) treats 5-10 batteries.
Petrolatum (white Vaseline) — workhorse for battery terminal. Cheap, effective for moderate temperature (≤60 °C terminal). Easy to apply. Used in ~90% of the aftermarket by volume worldwide (and in India). Silicone (PDMS dielectric grease) — premium for high-temperature (engine bay near exhaust), rubber boot compat (some terminal covers are EPDM that petrolatum can soften), electrical connector use.
3-5x cost of petrolatum. Used in premium 4W / motorcycle / OEM service. Functional choice based on application; petrolatum dominant in volume.
