What This Industry Specifically Demands

The Chemistry Constraints
Unique to Agriculture

UTTO and STOU are friction-modifier problems, not just viscosity problems. A tractor wet-brake system uses sintered metal friction plates running in the transmission oil. The brake’s friction characteristic must hold steady as the oil ages, heats and cools. Too much friction modifier and the brakes chatter on application; too little and they fade under continuous slip on steep slopes. The correct UTTO additive package carries a calibrated friction modifier (usually a sulphur-phosphorus combination with a controlled OFM secondary modifier) plus an EP additive (yellow-metal compatible) plus anti-wear for the gearbox plus VII for cold cranking. We design every UTTO to the OEM’s wet-brake friction window directly.

Indian rural fuel quality is a real variable. A tractor in Punjab or UP runs on diesel from a small-town pump that may still see periodic high-sulphur content. The engine oil must hold acid load — TBN 8 to 12 is normal for tractor engine oil even on a CF-4 grade, well above what an urban-fleet passenger car would need. We also build in dispersant capacity to handle the soot load from a partially-mistuned mechanical injection pump on an older Mahindra Bhoomiputra or Sonalika DI 60.

Wide ambient temperature window. An Indian tractor must crank in a Punjab winter at 3-5C and run flat in a Rajasthan May at 47C. The same fluid serves both. SAE 15W-40 with Group II + Group III base oil blend and a shear-stable OCP VII is the dominant compromise. Pour point below minus 20C and cold-cranking simulator below 7000 cP at minus 20C are typical targets.

OEM-specific specifications are the real procurement gate. Mahindra MASS, TAFE TGT, Sonalika ITL, Escorts EAL, John Deere J20 series and New Holland 134D each define a UTTO performance window with their own friction tests and field validation procedures. We formulate to multiple OEM specs in parallel and prepare the technical documentation for each. See our oil formulation service.

UTTO Approved Across
Three Tractor OEMs

Completed Engagement · Multi-OEM UTTO
Haryana-Based Lubricant Producer — One UTTO Formulation Across Mahindra, TAFE and Sonalika
A Haryana-based lubricant company supplying the Punjab, Haryana and Western UP tractor aftermarket wanted to launch a single UTTO product that could be marketed as suitable for the three dominant tractor brands in the region — Mahindra (MASS spec), TAFE Massey Ferguson (TGT) and Sonalika ITL. Their existing UTTO supplier had a Mahindra-compatible formulation but Sonalika dealers were rejecting it on warranty grounds. The brief was to formulate one product that passed all three OEM friction-test windows.
We built the formulation around an Afton HiTEC 391 UTTO additive package, on a Group II Plus 150N + 600N base oil blend giving SAE 10W-30 rheology, with a shear-stable OCP viscosity-index improver. The friction-modifier dose was tuned to land in the intersection of all three OEM specs (Mahindra MASS, TAFE TGT, Sonalika ITL) on the Allison C-4 wet-brake friction simulator. ASTM D5707 SRV wear was below 0.40 mm, four-ball wear below 0.50 mm. The product passed all three OEM-prescribed bench tests and was rolled out as a single-SKU multi-OEM UTTO. Within 18 months it became the client’s largest single SKU by volume.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked About
Agricultural Lubricant R&D

What is UTTO and how is it different from STOU?

UTTO (Universal Tractor Transmission Oil) is a single fluid that lubricates the tractor’s combined transmission, hydraulics, wet-brake system and PTO — but NOT the engine. The engine runs on a separate diesel engine oil. UTTO is the dominant configuration on modern tractors.

STOU (Super Tractor Oil Universal) is an even broader oil that serves the engine PLUS the transmission, hydraulics and wet brakes — one oil for everything on the tractor. STOU simplifies inventory for small farmers but is technically more demanding because it must satisfy diesel engine oil performance AND wet-brake friction characteristics in the same fluid.

Why are wet brakes a problem for tractor transmission oil?

Wet brakes share oil with the transmission. The sintered-metal friction plates of the wet brake require carefully tuned friction characteristics — too much friction modifier and the brakes chatter and squeal on application; too little and the brakes fade under continuous slip on a downhill slope.

The correct UTTO formulation carries a calibrated friction modifier package (typically sulphur-phosphorus EP combined with a controlled OFM secondary friction modifier) tuned to land within the OEM’s acceptable friction window across the operating temperature range. This is the single hardest part of UTTO formulation.

What engine oil grade for Mahindra and TAFE tractors?
SAE 15W-40 to API CF-4 or CI-4 is the dominant tractor diesel engine oil grade for Mahindra and TAFE Massey Ferguson tractors in India. CV-IV TREM-IV stage tractors increasingly call for API CK-4 with low-SAPS chemistry. Older models in the field still use SAE 20W-40 CF-4. We formulate the full ladder — SAE 15W-40 CF-4, 15W-40 CI-4, 15W-40 CK-4 low-SAPS, and the 20W-40 maintenance-grade for the older fleet.
Do you formulate biodegradable chain oil for forestry?
Yes. Biodegradable saw chain oil and forestry-equipment chain oil based on vegetable-ester chemistry — OECD 301B biodegradability above 60% in 28 days, OECD 203 minimal aquatic toxicity. Suitable for orchards, plantations and forestry where mineral oil contamination of soil, fruit and bark must be avoided. Tackifier polymer ensures the oil adheres to the saw chain at high RPM rather than throwing off into the surrounding environment.
Can UTTO also lubricate combine harvester hydraulics?
Yes — a well-designed UTTO covers the combined hydraulic, transmission and wet-brake systems of both tractors and most combine harvesters. Some self-propelled combines (New Holland TC, John Deere W-series) require a more specific hydraulic chemistry depending on pump type (piston vs gear pump). For these, a dedicated ISO VG 46 hydraulic oil is preferred. UTTO covers the transmission and gearbox side regardless.
Do you formulate to OEM specs like Mahindra MASS or TAFE TGT?
Yes. We formulate UTTO and STOU to Mahindra MASS, TAFE TGT (Massey Ferguson), Sonalika ITL, Escorts EAL, John Deere J20A/B/C/D, New Holland 134D, Eicher and Force OEM specifications. For premium grades we land formulations in the intersection of multiple OEM windows so a single SKU can be marketed as multi-OEM suitable. The OEM specs are the actual procurement gate in the Indian tractor aftermarket.
What about lubricant for newer CV-IV emission tractors?
Tractor CV-IV (TREM-IV stage) emission standards apply to tractors above 8 kW, with implementation from 2024 onwards. CV-IV tractors increasingly carry DPF and SCR after-treatment hardware. The engine oil must move to low-SAPS chemistry — API CK-4 limits or equivalent — with SA below 1.0%, P below 1200 ppm. We formulate the CV-IV-ready engine oils alongside the conventional high-SAPS oils for the older fleet.
