CV (constant velocity) joint grease is specialty grease for FWD / AWD car CV joints — ball-and-cage joints under steering articulation that see 2-3 GPa boundary contact pressure. Requires MoS2 + MoDTC solid lubrication + NBR boot compatibility. India FWD aftermarket (Maruti, Hyundai, Tata, Mahindra, Honda) ~6,000 MT/year. Process: lithium complex saponification (12-HSA + LiOH 195 °C; azelaic + LiOH 220 °C); dehydrate 180 °C; cool to 80 °C; high-shear add MoS2 + MoDTC (CRITICAL for uniform dispersion); charge EP / AW / AO / CI / tackifier; mill to NLGI 1. QC: drop >260 °C, penetration 310-340, 4-ball weld 400+ kgf, Timken 60+ lbf, NBR boot compat <5% volume swell after 168 hr at 80 °C, verified through ASTM Lubricant & Grease Testing. Ex-works cost ₹280-380 / kg at 5 MT batch. Pack 80-100 g sachet (per CV joint service) or 1 kg tub for workshop.
CV (Constant Velocity) joint grease is specialty grease for the ball-bearing CV joints that transmit drive from differential to wheels in FWD / AWD vehicles. The CV joint sees very high contact pressure under angular articulation (steering) — needs heavy Mo solid lubrication for boundary protection.
Distinguished from chassis grease by: MoS2 content 3-7%, NLGI 1 softer consistency for cold-start fluidity inside CV boot, NBR-elastomer boot compatibility (no aggressive solvent / additive that swells the boot). India aftermarket ~6,000 MT/year.
NLGI 1 lithium complex Mo-loaded CV grease BOM (%): Group II 220N 62%, 12-HSA 6%, azelaic 1.5%, LiOH 1.8%, MoS2 5%, MoDTC 1%, sulphurised olefin EP 3%, ZDDP 1.5%, phenolic AO 0.5%, aminic AO 0.5%, ASA + TTA 0.5%, PIB tackifier 0.8%, Ca nitrite 0.5%, black dye 1%, balance Group II diluent.
Process: Li complex saponification 195-220 °C; high-shear add MoS2 + MoDTC at 80 °C; charge additives; mill to NLGI 1. Drop >260 °C, 4-ball weld 400+ kgf, NBR boot compat <5% swell. The EP / AW / AO chemistry here is drawn from a standard Grease Additive Package tuned for Mo-loaded greases.
CV joint operates at extreme boundary — 6 ball-cage contact zones at 2-3 GPa contact pressure under steering articulation. Even premium EP additive film breaks at this pressure. MoS2 micro-powder (1-3 µm, treat 3-7%) provides solid-lubricant boundary film that survives the pressure. Coefficient 0.04-0.07.
Result: CV joint life extended 2-3x vs ordinary EP grease. Black grease appearance is the visual identifier — should never substitute regular black chassis grease (which is black from carbon black only, no MoS2).
India CV joint grease driven by FWD passenger car aftermarket — Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata, Mahindra (XUV AWD), Honda, Renault. CV boot service is the primary aftermarket trigger — boot tears, grease leaks, joint replacement + repacking. ~6,000 MT/year.
Brands: Castrol CV Joint Grease, Mobilith SHC PM, Klueber Wolfracoat A, Bardahl, Permatex, IOCL Servo CV Grease, BPCL Mak, HPCL. ₹220-580 / 100g tube retail. Lubechem custom (LC-CVG-NLGI1) ex-works ₹280-380 / kg. Blenders scaling CV grease alongside other lines should review the indicative Grease Plant Setup Cost first.
CV (constant velocity) and U-joint (universal / Cardan) are different drive-train components. CV joint — FWD / AWD car axle, 6-ball cage in cup, very high boundary pressure, MoS2 + Mo-DTC + NBR boot compat critical. U-joint — RWD truck / CV drive shaft, cross-and-cup design, moderate pressure, standard EP2 chassis grease often works (no MoS2, no boot constraint).
Different greases for different applications. Wrong CV grease in U-joint = OK; wrong U-joint grease in CV joint = early CV joint failure (no MoS2, joint runs in boundary at GPa pressure).
CV joint sealed by NBR (nitrile rubber) bellows boot — keeps grease in, water/dirt out. Boot is the most failure-prone CV joint component. Grease MUST be NBR-compatible — no solvent / additive that swells / hardens / attacks NBR. Volume change (168 hr at 80 °C): target ±5%, tensile retention >80%.
Compatible: paraffinic mineral base (Group I / II), lithium complex soap, MoS2, MoDTC, standard ZDDP, ASA, TTA. Incompatible: high-aromatic mineral, naphthenic with high naphthenic content, certain ester base, aromatic solvent. Lubechem CV grease tested for NBR compat per batch QC.
