Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS₂) Grease Explained

Molybdenum disulfide grease — “moly grease” — is a normal grease carrying a solid lubricant: fine particles of molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂). Under heavy load, shock or slow-speed sliding, the oil film thins and metal nearly touches metal; the MoS₂ plates out on the surface and keeps the two faces apart. That gives outstanding extreme-pressure and anti-wear protection where a plain grease would let the film collapse. Here is how it works, typical specs, and where it belongs.

How it works

A solid lubricant that plates onto metal

Molybdenum disulfide has a layered, plate-like crystal structure whose sheets slide over one another with very little resistance — like graphite. Blended into grease as a fine powder, those plates deposit on the metal surfaces and form a slippery, load-bearing solid film.

That film matters most in boundary lubrication: when load is high, motion is slow, or a joint reverses under shock, the hydrodynamic oil film thins to almost nothing and asperities touch. The MoS₂ layer carries the load and stops metal-to-metal welding and scuffing — complementing the liquid EP additives already in the grease.

MoS₂ (and graphite) are used exactly where oil films fail: shock-loaded, oscillating or very slow contacts. At high speed, a well-formulated oil film already does the job and the solid adds little.

What is molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) grease?

It is a grease that carries molybdenum disulfide — a solid lubricant — dispersed as a fine powder, typically at 3–5%. MoS₂ has a layered structure that shears easily and plates onto metal surfaces, giving extra extreme-pressure and anti-wear protection under heavy load, shock and slow-speed sliding where an oil film alone is insufficient.

What does the MoS₂ actually do in the grease?

Under boundary conditions — high load, low speed or shock — the oil film thins until metal surfaces nearly touch. The MoS₂ particles deposit on those surfaces as a slippery solid film that carries the load and prevents metal-to-metal welding and scuffing, complementing the grease’s liquid EP additives.

How much MoS₂ is used in moly grease?

Typically 3% to 5% by weight. Too little gives limited solid-film benefit; too much can affect pumpability and film formation. The exact level is tuned to the load and application, alongside the thickener, base oil and EP additive system.

Where should molybdenum disulfide grease be used?

It is ideal for heavily loaded, shock-loaded or slow, oscillating contacts: CV joints, pins and bushings, mining and construction equipment, open gears and slow heavy bearings. It is not recommended for high-speed precision bearings or electric-motor bearings, where finer greases perform better.

Is moly grease the same as graphite grease?

Both use a layered solid lubricant for boundary protection, and they are sometimes combined. MoS₂ generally gives higher load-carrying performance and works well in the absence of moisture, while graphite is often chosen for very high temperatures. The best choice depends on the load, temperature and environment.
