Modern disc-brake wheel bearings (passenger car and light truck) run at 120-180 °C continuous in service because of brake-disc heat transfer through the wheel hub. Standard lithium 12-OH EP2 (drop ~190 °C) is marginal — runs hot in summer, can flow out.
Wheel bearing grease uses lithium complex (drop >260 °C, service to 180 °C continuous) or polyurea (drop >260 °C, sealed-for-life) thickener. Also needs low leakage (D4290) and good high-temp life (D3527) for the sealed-hub application. NLGI GC-LB classification covers both wheel bearing (GC) and chassis (LB) applications.

NLGI GC-LB is the National Lubricating Grease Institute consumer-grease classification. GC = wheel bearing grease (high-temperature, high-speed, sealed hub). LB = chassis grease (water-resistant, high-load, exposed lube point). GC-LB-rated grease passes both — used for one-grease automotive applications where the workshop wants a single SKU for both wheel bearing repacking and chassis lube.
Tests: D3527 wheel bearing high-temp life (>80 hr), D4290 wheel bearing leakage (<5 g), D4170 fretting wear (<5 mg), D1264 water washout (<15%).
Both are valid. Lithium complex (12-HSA + azelaic acid complex with LiOH) is the established workhorse — drop >260 °C, good high-temp life, available, affordable. Polyurea (diurea or triurea from MDI + amine) is the OEM factory-fill choice for sealed-for-life electric motor and wheel-hub bearings — drop >260 °C, exceptional oxidation life, no soap to bleed; the same chemistry underpins our EV motor bearing grease and wind turbine bearing grease.
Polyurea costs 1.5-2x lithium complex. Aftermarket workshop standard is lithium complex; OEM factory-fill increasingly polyurea. Both pass NLGI GC-LB.

ASTM D3527 (life performance of automotive wheel bearing grease) — a tapered roller bearing is grease-packed, run at 1,000 rpm with intermittent 159 °C inner-race heating cycles until failure (vibration / torque rise). NLGI GC-LB target ≥80 hours service life.
Lithium 12-OH EP2 typically fails at 30-50 hr — not suitable for modern wheel bearing. Lithium complex passes 100-200 hr. Polyurea passes 200-500 hr. Critical test for wheel bearing grease qualification.
