The difference between synthetic and mineral oil is decided almost entirely by one thing: the base oil it is built on — 70–99% of the finished product. Mineral oils use refined crude (API Group I/II); synthetics use more processed or chemically-built stocks (Group III, IV PAO, V ester); semi-synthetics blend the two. It is a base-oil decision
“Synthetic” and “mineral” are marketing labels for what base stock the oil is built on. The API base oil groups are the precise version of the same idea:
- Mineral — Group I (solvent-refined) and Group II (hydrocracked) stocks made directly from crude oil.
- Synthetic — Group IV polyalphaolefin (PAO) and Group V esters/PAG are truly built by chemical synthesis; Group III is severely hydrocracked mineral marketed as synthetic.
- Semi-synthetic (part-synthetic) — a blend of mineral and synthetic base stocks, a middle ground on cost and performance.
Because the base oil is 70–99% of the product, this one choice sets the performance ceiling. Additives then fine-tune within it — but they cannot make a Group I oil behave like a PAO.

In short, synthetics buy you temperature range, drain interval and cleanliness; mineral oils buy you cost and solubility. Semi-synthetics sit in between — a common, sensible compromise for mainstream oils.
Is Group III really “synthetic”?
This is the most confusing point in the whole subject. Most oils sold as “fully synthetic” today are Group III — severely hydrocracked mineral oil, not chemically synthesised PAO. In many markets that labelling is legally allowed because Group III matches PAO on viscosity index and volatility.
- Group III (“synthetic”) — near-PAO performance at a fraction of the cost. The base of most full-synthetic passenger-car oils.
- Group IV (PAO) — true synthetic, best low-temperature and volatility; used in premium, extreme-temperature and long-drain oils, usually with a little ester.
- Group V (ester/PAG) — speciality synthetics, often a co-base to add solubility, polarity or biodegradability.
Practical takeaway: judge an oil by its specification (API, ACEA, OEM approval) and its Noack/VI numbers, not by the word “synthetic” on the bottle. A well-formulated Group III oil beats a poorly-formulated one regardless of label.
When each makes sense
Choose synthetic
Wide temperature swings, cold starts, long drain intervals, turbocharged/DI engines, fuel-economy grades (0W/5W), and anywhere oxidation or volatility limits matter. The higher cost is repaid in life and protection.
Choose mineral
Cost-sensitive applications, many industrial oils and greases, older or low-stress engines, and short drain intervals. A good Group II mineral oil is more than adequate for a large share of real-world lubrication.
Choose semi-synthetic
A balanced middle ground — better cold flow and oxidation than mineral, lower cost than full synthetic. A common choice for mainstream engine oils and many everyday applications.
Match the spec

Does synthetic oil last longer?
Yes — synthetic base oils resist oxidation and thermal breakdown far better, so they hold their grade and protective properties over longer drain intervals and wider temperatures. This is a major reason OEMs specify synthetics for long-service and severe-duty applications. Always follow the manufacturer’s drain interval regardless of base oil.
