Rail Axle Box Grease India —
Locomotive RDSO M-942 Class B BOM
Rail axle box grease lubricates the journal / roller bearing inside the axle box at each end of a rail vehicle axle — a product railways rely on worldwide, across India, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Europe and beyond. In India the governing standard is the RDSO M-942 Class B specification. Indian Railways alone uses ~2,500-3,500 MT/year across loco + coach + wagon. Modern high-speed Vande Bharat (180 km/h) demands premium PAO + polyurea; freight wagon (60-100 km/h) uses conventional lithium complex Class B. This guide gives the recommended BOM, the matching grease additive package, and the Indian Railways tender opportunity.
Working Rail Axle Box Grease
RDSO M-942 Class B Lithium Complex NLGI 2
| Component group | Typical role | Typical share |
|---|---|---|
| Base oil(s) | Carrier fluid (mineral / synthetic / bio) | ~75–90% |
| Thickener / soap system | Builds structure & consistency (NLGI grade) | ~8–15% |
| EP / anti-wear additive package | Load-carrying & wear protection | ~2–6% |
| Antioxidant, corrosion inhibitor, tackifier | Service life, rust protection, adhesion | balance |
Indicative high-level composition only. The exact components, treat rates, performance additives and approved suppliers are shared under NDA as part of a Lubechem formulation engagement.
Process: lithium complex saponification (12-HSA + LiOH at 195 °C; add azelaic + LiOH at 220 °C); dehydrate vacuum 180 °C; cool to 100 °C and add EP / AW / FM / AO / CI / tackifier; mill to NLGI 2. QC per RDSO M-942 Class B: drop >265 °C, penetration 265-295, 4-ball weld 315 kgf, water washout <8%, D942 oxidation <30 kPa @ 100 hr. Ex-works cost ₹170-240 / kg conventional (~US$2.0-2.8/kg); ₹240-340 / kg high-speed PAO variant (~US$2.8-4.0/kg) (LC-RAIL-AB-HS for Vande Bharat / Tejas). Pack 18 kg pail or 180 kg drum to railway depot via tender supply. Each batch should clear full ASTM lubricant & grease testing against the RDSO panel before dispatch.
Frequently Asked About
Rail Axle Box Grease
Rail axle box grease lubricates the journal / roller bearing inside the axle box at each end of a rail vehicle axle. Distinct from flange / curve grease (M-942 Class A applied to wheel flange) — axle box grease is for the bearing inside the cast-iron axle box. RDSO M-942 Class B specification.
Indian Railways uses ~2,500-3,500 MT/year of Class B axle box grease across loco + coach + wagon fleet. Vande Bharat (180 km/h), Tejas (160), Rajdhani Shatabdi (130) demand higher-spec; freight wagon (60-100) uses conventional. Lithium complex NLGI 2 with extended oxidation life is the modern standard, and a volume at this scale is what makes evaluating the grease plant setup cost worthwhile.
RDSO M-942 Class B lithium complex NLGI 2 BOM (%): Group II 220N 68%, 12-HSA 6.5%, azelaic 1.5%, LiOH 1.8%, sulphurised olefin EP 3%, ZDDP 1.5%, MoDTC 0.5%, methylene-bis-DTBP AO 0.8%, aminic AO 0.6%, ASA + TTA CI 0.6%, Ca nitrite 0.5%, PIB tackifier 0.8%, balance Group II diluent.
Process: Li complex saponification 195-220 °C; cool 100 °C, add additives; mill NLGI 2. Drop >265 °C, 4-ball weld 315 kgf, water washout <8%, D942 oxidation <30 kPa.
Different. Vande Bharat (180 km/h) and high-speed Indian rail (Tejas 160, Shatabdi 130) demand premium — synthetic PAO base, polyurea or lithium complex thickener, FE9 bearing life >25,000 hr, low noise, 100,000+ km maintenance-free. RDSO M-942 Class B High-Speed sub-spec.
Freight wagon (60-100 km/h) accepts conventional — mineral or Group II base, lithium complex, FE9 life >10,000 hr. Service interval 30,000-50,000 km. Cost differential 40-80% premium for high-speed.
RDSO Class B approved: IOCL Servo Rail Axle Bearing Grease (largest), BPCL Mak Rail Axle, HPCL HiTec Rail, Castrol, Gulf, Apar, Tide Water Veedol, Savita Oil. ~12-15 RDSO-approved suppliers. Tender pricing ₹200-320 / kg (~US$2.4-3.8/kg).
Annual tender per railway zone (Northern, Eastern, Southern, Central, Western + 9 more zones + DMRC + LMRC metro). Lubechem custom (LC-RAIL-AB-NLGI2) ex-works ₹170-240 / kg conventional (~US$2.0-2.8/kg); ₹240-340/kg high-speed PAO variant (~US$2.8-4.0/kg).
(1) Freight wagon — 30,000-50,000 km or 24-36 months. Re-greasing during overhaul. (2) Passenger coach — 50,000-80,000 km. (3) Locomotive axle (WAG / WAP class) — 60,000-100,000 km. (4) Vande Bharat / high-speed — 100,000-150,000 km with sealed-for-life polyurea.
Re-greasing at railway workshop — wheels lifted, axle box opened, old grease cleaned, fresh grease packed (200-500 g per axle box). Tender supply in 18 kg pail and 180 kg drum to depot.
