ACEA Oil Sequences Explained

ACEA sequences are Europe’s answer to the API categories — a performance standard set by European carmakers, built around European engine tests and, critically, around protecting exhaust after-treatment. Where API uses a single letter-pair (SP, CK-4), ACEA sorts oils into three families — A/B for petrol and light diesel, C for catalyst-compatible low-ash oils, and E for heavy-duty diesel. Here is what each class means and how to read a claim like ACEA C3.

The idea

Three families, and SAPS as the dividing line

ACEA (the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association) publishes “oil sequences” — sets of engine and bench tests an oil must pass. They split by engine duty and, above all, by how much ash the oil leaves behind:

  • A/B — petrol & light-duty diesel. The traditional full-SAPS car oils (e.g. A3/B4, A5/B5, A7/B7).
  • C — catalyst compatible. Low- or mid-SAPS oils for engines with diesel particulate filters (DPF) or three-way catalysts (C1–C6).
  • E — heavy-duty diesel. Trucks, buses and off-highway (E4, E6, E7, E8, E9, E11).

SAPS = Sulphated Ash, Phosphorus and Sulphur. These come mostly from the detergent and ZDDP chemistry. They protect the engine — but ash clogs a DPF and phosphorus/sulphur poison catalysts. The whole C family exists to cap SAPS so the after-treatment survives.

C3 is the workhorse European car spec today — mid-SAPS with a full-strength HTHS ≥ 3.5, so it protects like an A3/B4 while staying DPF-safe. C5 and C6 trade some film strength (HTHS ≥ 2.6) for fuel economy and must only be used where the OEM allows it.

E class

Heavy-duty diesel — the E sequences

ACEA E4 / E7

High-performance heavy-duty diesel. E7 gives strong deposit and wear control for engines with or without EGR; E4 is a premium, extended-drain, mostly-non-DPF oil for demanding fleets.

ACEA E6 / E9

Low-SAPS heavy-duty oils for engines with DPF and SCR after-treatment. E9 pairs a mid-SAPS chemistry with wide hardware compatibility — a mainstream modern truck spec.

ACEA E8 / E11

The newest heavy-duty sequences, extending oxidation, aeration and after-treatment protection for the latest low-emission diesel engines and longer drains.

ACEA vs API

How ACEA differs from API

They test the same idea — engine protection — but not the same way, so a good oil often carries both:

  • Different engines. ACEA uses European test engines (piston cleanliness, bore polish, oxidation, DI diesel); API uses North American engines. ACEA limits are often tougher on deposits and oxidation.
  • SAPS is explicit. ACEA’s C family sets hard SAPS ceilings; API handles after-treatment protection differently and less prescriptively.
  • HTHS tiers. ACEA defines several HTHS bands (2.6 / 2.9 / 3.5) inside its classes, giving finer fuel-economy vs protection control.

The practical result: a European OEM oil is usually specified as an ACEA sequence plus the OEM’s own approval (VW, MB, BMW), while an API grade is the global baseline. A well-built formula clears the relevant ACEA, API and BIS targets at once.

What does ACEA stand for?

ACEA is the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (Association des Constructeurs Européens d’Automobiles). It publishes the ACEA Oil Sequences — the engine-oil performance standard used by European carmakers, tested on European engines.

What is the difference between ACEA A3/B4 and C3?

A3/B4 is a full-SAPS oil with a strong film (HTHS ≥ 3.5) for engines without a diesel particulate filter. C3 delivers the same HTHS ≥ 3.5 protection but with mid-SAPS chemistry, so it is safe for engines with DPFs and catalysts. If a car has a DPF, use the C grade the maker specifies, not A3/B4.

What does SAPS mean in engine oil?

SAPS stands for Sulphated Ash, Phosphorus and Sulphur — the components that mostly come from detergents and ZDDP anti-wear additives. They protect the engine but can clog diesel particulate filters and poison catalysts, so low- and mid-SAPS oils (ACEA C class) cap them to protect after-treatment systems.

Is ACEA better than API?

Neither is simply better — they are different standards. ACEA uses European engine tests and is often stricter on deposits, oxidation and after-treatment (SAPS), while API is the global baseline built on North American tests. Premium oils frequently meet both, plus the specific OEM approval the vehicle requires.

Which ACEA grade do I need?

Follow the owner’s manual — the OEM specifies the exact sequence (e.g. C3, C5, E9) and usually an additional maker approval. Using a lower-SAPS or different-HTHS oil than specified can shorten DPF life or reduce protection, so match the claim exactly rather than assuming a newer grade is safe.
