When hydraulic oil foams or turns milky
Foam is air trapped as bubbles — suction leaks, low level, a return line above the oil, or a killed antifoam. Milky is water emulsified in the oil — cooler leaks, condensation, wash-down. Treat the cause. Changing ISO VG without fixing air or water only buys a quiet afternoon.
Foam versus emulsion
| Foam (air) | Milky (water) | |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Bubbles, froth on top, level jumping | Haze, beige/coffee, no distinct bubbles |
| Feel / test | Spongy controls, noisy pump, cavitation | Crackle on a hot plate, KF water ppm high |
| First fix | Suction tightness, oil level, return below surface | Find water source, drain/filter, check cooler |
What the plant is doing
Air leaks
Loose suction fittings, cracked hoses, a pump sitting above a low tank. The pump is chewing foam, not oil.
Reservoir design
Return dumping onto the surface, no baffle, residence time too short for bubbles to collapse.
Water
Heat-exchanger leak, uncovered tank, monsoon condensation. Water also kills lubricity and rusts the pump.
Fluid
Wrong viscosity (see ISO 32 vs 46 vs 68), detergent contamination from engine oil top-up, or antifoam stripped by fine filtration.
Stop treating foam with more chemistry first
Antifoam (usually silicone or acrylate) is a ppm-level additive. Extra product often creates stable microfoam. Engine oil in a hydraulic tank adds detergent that wants to emulsify water. Fix air and water, then judge the fluid.
Foam and milky oil FAQ
Can I run the machine if the oil is foaming?
Spongy hydraulics and a screaming pump are cavitation. Shut down and find air before you destroy the pump.
Will a vacuum dehydrator fix milky oil?
It removes free and some dissolved water. It does not repair a leaking cooler. Fix the source or the milk comes back.
Is biodegradable hydraulic oil more likely to foam?
Some esters hold water differently and need their own antifoam. The first checks are still leaks and tank design.
