CVT fluid has to grip. ATF has to shift.
A belt or chain CVT transmits power by friction between steel and steel. The fluid has to keep that friction high and stable. A conventional automatic transmission uses wet paper clutches, and Dexron-type ATF is tuned for that different friction pair. Putting ATF in a CVT slips the belt. Putting CVT fluid in a stepped automatic makes the shifts wrong. India volume — Maruti, Hyundai, Honda, Toyota — is mostly CVT, so this page stands apart from the Dexron ATF note.
Three fluids, three friction jobs
Dexron / stepped AT
Paper clutch on steel. Static-to-dynamic friction ratio is the shift feel. See the Dexron formulation page.
CVT
Steel belt or chain on pulleys. Too little steel friction and the belt slips. Too much shudder on the launch clutch and the car judders.
DCT / DSG
Two clutches, high energy, its own OEM fluids (VW/Audi DSG, Mercedes DCT). Not covered by a CVT claim.
Aftermarket “universal CVT”
A risky label. If the bottle cannot name the OEM specs it was tested against, it is a friction guess. We formulate to a named list, not to the word universal.
What actually moves when you change the friction modifier
The base oil is usually a shear-stable Group III or PAO so the viscosity survives the belt contact and the pump. The VI improver has to stay in grade; a CVT that shears thin loses hydraulic control and film. The friction-modifier package is the part that separates a Honda fluid from a Nissan fluid. Calcium and phosphorus show up in published elemental fingerprints; zinc may or may not. Matching a fingerprint is not the same as matching friction durability.
JASO 1A-style anti-shudder tests describe the launch clutch. They do not, by themselves, prove belt grip. A development needs both: paper-on-steel behaviour for the clutch, and steel-on-steel behaviour for the variator. That is why a Dexron DI package poured into a light base oil is not a CVT fluid.
Lubechem builds the fluid to the OEM list you sell against, with the friction and shear tests that list implies. We do not print an OEM approval we do not hold.
The cars that created the demand
The aftermarket request is usually a small set of SKUs, not twenty OEM bottles. Group the real parc: which NS-3, HCF-2 and Toyota TC cars you actually service, then decide how many formulas that is. A shop that tops a Honda CVT with a Dexron can of “ATF” is the field failure this page is meant to prevent.
Gear oils and engine oils on the same platform are separate: GL-5 gear oil does not go in a CVT, and a 0W-16 engine oil does not either.
Public technical sources
Public patents and papers cited as field references. Lubechem does not own these inventions and this page is not a formula.
- Infineum — Power transmission fluids, southern Asia (2019 briefing) — CVT hardware, typical viscosity, and steel-on-steel friction ranges for named OEM fluid types.
- OEM service fills: NS-2/NS-3, HCF-2/HMMF, Toyota CVTF TC — These are manufacturer specifications. Listing them is not an approval.
CVT fluid questions
Can Dexron VI be used in a CVT?
No. Dexron VI is a stepped-automatic fluid. A CVT needs belt or chain friction that Dexron is not built to provide. The usual result is slip.
Is there a BIS standard for CVT fluid?
Indian ATF has been covered under BIS work aligned with older Dexron classes. CVT fluids remain OEM specifications. Do not assume an ATF ISI mark is a CVT approval.
How many CVT formulas does a blender need?
As many as the OEM list you are willing to stand behind. One honest NS-3 fluid is more useful than a universal claim you cannot test.
Name the OEM specs on the brief
NS-3, HCF-2, Toyota TC, or a written list. “CVT oil” alone is not a target.
